Where we work

The charity has extensive experience of east and southern Africa. Through our expedition, we’ve worked in eight countries where we continue to build on trusted relationships with stakeholders who share our goals and values, while developing locally delivered programs and projects in Malawi and Tanzania. Due to pandemic-related restrictions on international travel, we’ve put a pause on volunteer engagement until further notice.

Malawian, Wordsworth Rashid, contacted us in 2011 with the hope of connecting us to schools. Today, Wordsworth is a full-time development officer for Bhubesi Pride Foundation, leading a year-round school sports and life skills program. We’re nearing the completion of a (successfully fundraised) sports and education community centre on a 7-acre site, 25 km from town.

Through our volunteering activities, we’ve supported school communities with rugby in Arusha and Dar es Salaam and, alongside partner organisations, we’ve helped to develop confidence in vulnerable children living on the streets of Moshi. We’re now focusing our efforts on assisting community development in Arusha through sport, providing grant funding and strategic guidance to sustain and grow initiatives here.

In the heart of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, people live in extreme poverty, in slums such as Kibera and Mathare. In collaboration with local partners, our annual coaching expedition has given children the chance to play rugby, compete, and develop life skills through fun and engaging youth programs and tournaments.

Our expedition has facilitated volunteer programs in Jinja since 2012, running outreach coaching and tournament days with children from local primary schools and an orphanage called SPEC Foundation. We link up with players and coaches from Ugandan club sides and the Lady Cranes women’s national team. Alongside the Ugandan Rugby Union, we have plans to develop existing programs.

Bhubesi Pride Foundation has worked with primary and secondary schools in Choma and Kabwe. Having developed a progressive relationship with Kabwe’s Die Hard Rugby – an organisation endorsed by the Zambia Rugby Union – through our expedition, we’re continuing to support this passionate rugby community helping youth rugby programs, men’s and women’s club coaching and coach education.

Botswana’s national rugby landscape has enabled Bhubesi Pride Foundation to work closely with the Botswana Rugby Union over the years to run annual coaching programs in three locations, including Gaborone, Selebi-Phikwe and Maun. Collaborating with club sides, such as the Gaborone Hogs and Maun Puppies, ensures players and local coaches benefit from varied participation.

Since 2015 and with volunteers on our annual expedition, we’ve initiated coaching programs and tournaments with children and teachers in schools in Maputo. The Mozambique Rugby Federation, with which we collaborate, has a growing number of inspiring coaches and we've seen transformational development taking place.

South Africa

Rich in rugby heritage, South Africa has a huge opportunity to use the sport as a powerful tool for social upliftment in its most deprived locations and nurture talent through its expansive development setup. Working with township communities in Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria on our annual coaching expedition, we continue to unlock talent and change lives through sport and education.
