Commitment and hard work nurtures development through rugby

Zambia is a mecca for wildlife and adventure enthusiasts. Victoria Falls is fittingly known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning The Smoke That Thunders. Here, adrenaline seekers can view the falls on foot and from the air, bungee jump, gorge swing and go white water rafting on the Zambezi River. South Luangwa National Park is home to the Big Five and the endangered African Wild Dog. Copper accounts for the majority of Zambia’s exports but much of the industry has experienced decline, including in Kabwe, where we operate.

Die Hard Rugby

Having worked with schools in Choma for five years – introducing rugby and helping Nahumba Basic School by refurbishing a classroom and donating 25 computers as part of an ICT initiative with G4S Zambia – we were contacted by Tom Chaloba, Founder of Die Hard Rugby in Kabwe. Tom’s program incorporates World Rugby’s Get into Rugby framework, offering children the chance to ‘Try, Play and Stay’ in the game. Collaborating with Die Hard Rugby since 2016, our annual volunteer programs allow us to support a youth program with 450 children, work with coaches to share and learn from each other and assist men’s and women’s teams at Green Eagles Rugby Club.

** Due to pandemic-related restrictions on international travel, we have put a pause on volunteer engagement activities in Zambia, until further notice. **

Beyond our expedition volunteer coaching programs, equipment donations and enabling Zambian coaches to travel to other African countries, we’re reviewing additional ways to support rugby-for-development in Kabwe, in line with Bhubesi Pride Foundation’s goals.
